Before SE Ocean and I expanded into structure, systems, and strategy, my core professional experience was in SEO and digital marketing: websites, content, and understanding how businesses reach the people they want to communicate with.
I have worked as an SEO Specialist and taught SEO. In its earlier period, SE Ocean took a Holistic SEO approach, connecting search, website structure, content, and user experience with each business's goals.
This work requires specialist knowledge alongside an understanding of context. Decisions about a website or its content depend on data, people's behaviour, and what the business needs to achieve.
Attending Search Central Live was part of staying informed in a field where I already had experience. It offered an opportunity to hear from Google's team and reconsider how my understanding aligned with a changing system.
Understanding principles before choosing an approach
The event covered how Search works, content quality and updates, AI, multilingual websites, Google Trends, and Search Console. The subjects connected foundations with practical work.
Experience brings familiar approaches that have worked before. I value that knowledge and believe it should be revisited alongside new information. Hearing directly from the team behind the system offers another perspective for checking my understanding.
I care about knowing what we are changing, why, and what we expect it to achieve. When results change, data and context should inform the next decision. This principle relates to both my digital work and work with a broader scope.
Using search data to ask about people and businesses
The stage photograph I kept is from a Google Trends presentation. The slide includes the words Scale, Fresh, and Honest, relating to my interest in using data to understand what people care about.
Search data can open questions at different levels: what people are trying to understand, when an interest changes, and what a business can offer that responds to it. Reading data can inform content, user experience, and business direction.
Each dataset also has limits. Growing interest can be a starting point for further investigation, alongside an understanding of people, market conditions, and the business's readiness. I am interested in combining evidence from different areas to make options and consequences clearer.
Connecting specialist knowledge with a broader view
SEO and digital marketing form part of the foundation of my work today. I bring an understanding of websites, content, data, and user behaviour into questions of structure, systems, and strategy.
Following AI and the direction of Search belongs within this experience. Technology changes both access to information and how businesses work. Choosing an appropriate approach requires an understanding of the tools and the context in which they operate.
This experience shows my continued learning within an established field of practice, while connecting specialist knowledge with a wider view of the work and its circumstances.
